A New You: Giving up smoking is the single most important thing you could do to improve your health and increase your chances of a better quality of life.

Maybe you’ve tried before but found yourself unable to go it alone? or perhaps you have recently given up but just can’t stop the cravings – If so help is at hand.

The South Western Staffordshire Primary Care Trust continually strives to improve the health of residents across the area and has a dedicated service for those in need of help to stop smoking.

There are weekly groups at various locations across the patch and also one-to-one support from your local GP practice.

Smoking is the cause of more health problems and illnesses than anything else in the UK and it is the NHS that is left to pick up the multi million pound bill.

By helping people to quit, the PCT is not only improving the health and well-being of its residents but also helping to save hundreds of thousands of pounds in the treatment of smoking related illnesses, which could then be reinvested into other health care services.

Heather Temperton, Health improvement Officer at the PCT said: “No one is going to pretend that giving up smoking is easy but it is worth the effort in terms of quality years added to your life.

“It is worth persevering and the PCT can help you. If you join a group you will find others experiencing the same problems as yourself. Alternatively, you can have one to one sessions at your GP practice.”

Anyone wanting more information about the courses on offer can either contact their local family GP practice or Heather Temperton on 01785 220004 extension 5209.
